Cultural Assets-Sutra Mounds

Goma no Tawa Hodome Daiba-dattahon (Sutra mound #12)

Sutra mound #12. Go down the Nanakoshi-toge Pass heading toward the Kishu (Wakayama) side until you get to the Kono district. By a signpost on the trail is a sutra mound of split stones. It’s mentioned in the Shozan-engi (a record of Shugendo mountains compiled in the late 12th century) as well as in the Katsurei-zakki (a guidebook on Katsuragi Shugen published in 1850). Legend has it that a local man dug up the earth believed to have been a sutra mound, discovered an ancient mirror, and worshiped the place as the former residence of kami (gods).
