Cultural Assets-Sutra Mounds

Mukai Tawa Kanjihon (Sutra mound #13)

Sutra mound #13. The Katsurei-zakki (a guidebook on Katsuragi Shugen published in 1850) calls this sutra mound “Kama no Tawa” or “Mukai no Tawa”. Today, it is marked by an Izumi sandstone monument engraved with the kanji for Dainichi Nyorai—the Great Sun Buddha. The sutra mound sits at the foot of a pine tree on a mountaintop southeast of the Horikoshi Shaku-kannon Temple. It is believed to have once been at Tomyobu-ji Temple—which fell into disuse during the Edo Period (1603 to 1867)—before being moved to its present location. Today on the summit of Mount Tomyo, you’ll find a stone statue of En no Gyoja enshrined in a stone altar.
