Cultural Assets-Sutra Mounds

Amami-fudo Funbetsu-kudokuhon

Sutra mound #17 is in Toishidani Valley, which is a short way up the Nagaredani River from Hachimanjinja Shrine. Climbing up this valley takes you to the Diamond Trail, which leads to Kimi-toge Pass and Mt. Iwawaki. The sutra mound is on a relatively flat area near the ridge. Inside the mini shrine are two stone Buddhist statues called Amami-fudo. These were revered by the local people of Amami who prayed for rain here.
