Miyanoko and Katsuragi-jinja Shrine New Year's Event
This New Year’s event is held every year by local Miyanoko (shrine’s brotherhood) members on the second Monday of January at Katsuragi-jinja Shrine in Hashimoto. It’s well known by local residents. Since the shrine lacks a priest of its own, members of religious groups at 12 nearby shrines take turns serving as the shrine’s priest one year at a time. On the day of the event, participants are led by a large, 20-kilogram torch to a basin fed by a waterfall, which they enter to purify themselves. The ritual has been designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
