Lotus Festival at Tenporin-ji Temple
The Lotus Festival is the oldest festival at Tenporin-ji Temple. It is held each year on July 7, the anniversary of En no Gyoja’s death. The event includes offerings of lotus flowers, which are what give the festival its name. On the day, a priest from Sanbo-in of Kyoto’s Daigo-ji Temple leads a Saito Daigoma fire ritual that involves burning sacred wood to express gratitude towards En no Gyoja. After this ritual, the embers are used for fire-walking.
