Ajigamine Gyoja-do

Tradition holds that Ajigamine Gyoja-do was built at the beginning of the Edo Period (17th century) by Doko-hosshinno when he underwent ascetic training in Katsuragi. Doko-hosshinno was a son of Emperor Goyozei, served as head priest of Shogo-in Temple, and held the title Overseer of Kumano Sanzan (the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano). Gyoja-do played an important role as the place where Shugendo practitioners stayed before crossing to training sites on Tomogashima Islands, and many pilgrims continue to visit today. The shrine, which sits atop a hill above 117 stone steps, is also known for its panoramic views of Kada and the Kitan Strait, which includes Tomogashima Islands.
