Hakanotani Gyoja-do
Located in the mountains north of Musota and to the northeast of Hon’ei-ji Temple, Hakanotani Gyoja-do is believed by some to be Katsuragi Shugen sutra mound #3. The Kii Zoku-fudoki, an early 19th century geography record, describes the site as housing the tomb of En no Gyoja’s mother (“A Shugendo training site, said to be the tomb of En no Gyoja’s mother”). Pilgrims can still be seen at the site on the 7th day of each month to commemorate the anniversary of the mother’s death. Admiring En no Gyoja’s mother, many parents pray at this temple for their children’s future, including for success in entrance exams, job searches, marriage, and recovery from illness.
